How would people be able to justify there crimes without religion

Former leader Radovan Karadzic has said the Serb cause in the Bosnian war was "just and holy" as he began his defence at his genocide trial at The Hague.

I do have to wonder that without religion how much harder would it be for people to justify there crimes that were performed for political not religious reasons.
